2024-03-13 Huawei ranks first in international patent applications. 6,494 applications were submitted last year, beating Samsung’s 3,924 applications. CATL’s ranking jumped to eighth place.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced the 2023 global PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) international patent application rankings. China continues to rank first in the number of PCT international patent applications. Among corporate applicants, Huawei continues to rank first in the world and BOE ranks fifth. Among the top ten applicants, CATL has the fastest growth, rising 84 places to eighth.

Yicai reported that the number of PCT international patent applications is an important indicator of innovation activities. Against the backdrop of rising interest rates and economic uncertainty, the number of applications submitted through WIPO’s PCT system in 2023 was 272,600, a year-on-year decrease of 1.8%.

China is still the country with the largest number of PCT applications, with 69,610 applications, a year-on-year decrease of 0.6%; the United States ranks second, with 55,678 applications, a year-on-year decrease of 5.3%; Japan ranks third, with 48,879 applications, a year-on-year decrease of 2.9%. Ranking fourth and fifth were South Korea with 22,288 applications and Germany with 16,916 applications, with an year-on-year increase of 1.2% and an year-on-year decrease of 3.2% respectively.

WIPO Director General Daren Tang said that despite the short-term decline, the long-term trend shows that in an increasingly globalized and digitalized economy, the use of intellectual property rights is growing steadily and is expanding globally with the economic development of countries around the world. Asian countries now account for 55.7% of international patent applications filed through WIPO, compared with 40.5% a decade ago.

Among corporate applicants, Huawei continues to rank first in the world with 6,494 applications, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics ranks second with 3,924 applications, followed by the United States’ Qualcomm in third with 3,410 applications, and Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric with 2,152 applications ranked fourth. China’s BOE ranks fifth in the world with 1,988 PCT patent applications, becoming the only semiconductor display company in the top five on the list.
