A UN agency announced on the 3rd that from 2014 to 2023, China submitted over 38,000 technical patent applications related to generative AI, ranking first globally and far surpassing the second place, the United States, which had 6,276 applications.

According to various foreign media reports, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a report on the 3rd stating that from 2014 to 2023, the number of technical patent applications related to generative AI surged, totaling over 50,000, with 2023’s applications accounting for one-quarter of the total. This trend indicates explosive growth in this technology since generative AI became widely integrated into public life at the end of 2022, sparking interest from various sectors.

WIPO’s patent analysis manager, Christopher Harrison, noted that generative AI is a rapidly growing field, with the rate of patent applications expected to accelerate. While retailers and other institutions have extensively used chatbots capable of mimicking human conversation to enhance customer service, generative AI has the potential to transform numerous fields such as science, publishing, transportation, and security.

Harrison stated that the patent applications submitted by China cover areas including autonomous driving, publishing, and document management.

Despite China’s global lead in the number of submitted patents, WIPO acknowledges that quantity does not equate to quality. In the early stages of technological development, it is challenging to determine which patents will have market value or be transformative for society.

Stanford University’s AI Index Report, released in April, shows that as of 2023, the United States leads with 61 top AI models, surpassing the combined total of 21 from EU countries and 15 from China. Among EU member states, France ranks first with 8 top AI models.
