Patent Licensing Champion for Three Consecutive Years: Samsung Secures the Top Spot, TSMC Surpasses Qualcomm to Take Second Place

Liberty Times Net, January 14, 2025

According to data from IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, the number of U.S. patents granted in 2024 increased by 3.8% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 324,043 patents. Samsung maintained its top position for the third consecutive year, while TSMC climbed to second place, pushing Qualcomm to third.

IFI CLAIMS Patent Services is a digital science company that compiles and tracks data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and other patent-granting organizations worldwide. IFI transforms this leading data into rankings for the top 50 fastest-growing technologies and U.S. patents annually.

In addition to the growth in patent grants, U.S. patent applications also reached a historical high, increasing from 418,111 in 2023 to 430,625 in 2024, a growth of 3%. This indicates that the overall innovation economy in the United States is stronger than ever.

In the 2024 U.S. top 50 rankings by IFI, TSMC rose to second place, ahead of Qualcomm. Apple and Huawei entered the top five, while IBM fell to eighth place. Previously, IBM held the top position for 29 consecutive years but was overtaken by Samsung two years ago due to IBM’s more selective patent strategy.

Samsung continues to lead, with its number of patents increasing from 6,165 in 2023 to 6,377 in 2024, a growth of 3%. Samsung accounted for nearly 2% of all patents granted in the U.S. last year.

TSMC rose to second place with 3,989 patents, an 8% increase from 3,687 in 2023. Qualcomm, which ranked second last year, dropped to third due to an 11% decline in its granted patents, from 3,854 to 3,422.

Apple moved up three spots to fourth place, while Google also climbed three places to tenth. Meanwhile, patent giant IBM dropped four spots in 2024 but remained in the top 10.

As for the so-called “Magnificent Seven” tech companies—Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla—these companies continued to demonstrate strong stock performance in 2024. However, only the first four had enough patents to enter the top 50, with the latter three notably absent.
