【Reporter Jiang Yongyou/New Taipei Report】
Lin Song-qing, former senior director of power systems at Gogoro Inc., and Tu Chi-jie, former director of the human resources department, were suspected of poaching the R&D team to start LSC Ecosystem Corp. (LSC) and stealing Gogoro’s undisclosed electric motorcycle trade secrets. The two parties later reached a settlement. The New Taipei District Court sentenced Lin and Tu to six months in prison for using trade secrets abroad and breach of trust, and the other engineers were sentenced to 20 days of detention; all of them were suspended for two years.

Lin Song-qing co-founded Gogoro with Lu Xue-sen, former chairman, and is also the top executive of Gogoro’s power system department; he is the chief motor master certified by Gogoro. When Lin led his team to leave, the outside described it as “comrades turning into enemies”. Afterwards, it was discovered that SYM, a traditional motorcycle giant, had injected funds into the team, which caused a sensation in the industry.

Gogoro once led the global market in the production of electric scooters. The annual operating income from 2018 to 2020 approached 10 billion TWD, and the key technology was the “water-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motor” exclusively developed by the power system department led by Lin Song-qing.

In 2018, Lin Song-qing and Lu Xue-sen began to disagree. Lin suggested that Gogoro focus on supplying battery swap systems and let other automakers develop the body part; Lu insisted on selling the entire platform of batteries, power, and frames, and creating the PBGN (Power by Gogoro Network) alliance with automakers such as AEON and PGO. Lin believes that although Gogoro has a dominant market share, it will cause stagnation and no progress in the long term.

In July 2019, Tu Chi-jie revealed Lin Song-qing’s intention to set up his own business to SYM chairman Wu Qing-yuan through an intermediary, which aroused Wu’s great interest. Wu invested 100 million TWD in LSC in two installments through his mainland subsidiary Qing-da.

Wu Qing-yuan also accompanied Lin Song-qing to sign an investment agreement with VPIC in the second half of 2019. VPIC participated in the capital increase of LSC through its subsidiary OTTOBIKE. LSC was responsible for research and development and assisted VPIC in establishing assembly lines for shipments.

Lin Song-qing also selected seven supervisors or engineers from Gogoro’s power system department and poached them with high salaries. Afterwards, it was discovered that LSC’s main product was the same as the electric motorcycle platform system of the “SOLOMON Project” that Gogoro had developed but not yet made public.
